The exhaustion of petroleum resources is about to come sooner or later. To prepare for the days, countries worldwide are striving to develop a more sustainable chemical industry, in particular, with emphasis on bio-based processes, renewable bio-feedstock and green products, where, in particular, an important role is played by the Industrial Biotechnology. As the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games is the outstanding event for China and for the World, we will take an opportunity to make it a “Green Olympics” thus to be a stimulus to promote development and implementation of sustainability concepts in China and worldwide.

 

In 2005 and 2006, the Office of Science and Technology Committee for the Games of the XXIX Olympiad had built favorable communication platform between scientists, technologists, decision makers from government and key industrial players who were involved in biodegradable plastics and other related issues.

 

This year’s meeting, 2007, Several editors-in-chief of principal journals on bio-based and green materials are invited to give keynote lectures to the audiences of mixed backgrounds, including scientists, technologists, and decision makers from the government. Key industrial players will be also invited to deliver their vision of the future of green chemistry and industrial biotechnology. Industrial participants will be encouraged to show their Green Products, which can be potentially considered in the Green Olympics project for catering applications during the Olympic Games. Biodegradable and biocompatible materials will be displayed during the conference. Participants from developing countries and countries with economies in transition are encouraged to apply.

 

In order to promote the applications and use of Green Materials (Biodegradable plastics, etc.) during the whole process of the Games of the XXIX Olympiad, the Office of Science and Technology Committee for the Games of the XXIX Olympiad hold this exhibition and gather scientists, manufactures in the field of green materials, and cooperative associates of the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games to decide which kind of green materials can be used in 2008 Beijing Olympic Games especially in packaging materials for food industry use, which could be a big problem for waste disposal after the close of 2008 Beijing Olympic Games.

 

More over, The Office of Science and Technology Committee for the Games of the XXIX Olympiad and International Center for Science and High Technology-United Nations Industry Development Organization (ICS-UNIDO) also want to promote the development of green material in the developing countries after the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games, in this year’s exhibition 2007, a limited number of participants will receive full or partial support by ICS-UNIDO. This initiative is going to be very important for spreading awareness and building capacity to introduce sustainable chemical industry in the post-Olympic economy of China. We believe that further developments will be focused on the exploitation of bio-feedstock and adoption of more sustainable processes, including catalysis and biotechnology, especially in China, where the lack of fossil resources, overpopulation, and heavy pollution pose a big issue.
